Phosphalugel

Phosphalugel belongs to the group of antacid preparations, which also have an enveloping and adsorbing action.

The active substance of the drug is aluminum phosphate. Phosphalugel is able to neutralize the free hydrochloric acid found in the stomach, as well as reduce the activity of pepsin. For ten minutes under the influence of the drug acidity is reduced to a level of 3.5-5.

The drug is absorbed on the mucous membrane of the stomach, preventing the influence of aggressive factors on the mucosa of the duodenum and stomach. In addition, Fosfalugel enhances their own defense mechanisms, does not affect the physiology of digestion, almost does not cause reactive secretion of hydrochloric acid (HCl). Due to the absorbing effect of the drug, viruses, bacteria, gases, exo- and endotoxins are removed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Composition and form of release

Pharmaceutical form of the release of Fosfalugel - oral gel: homogeneous, white or almost white, with the smell of orange (16 or 20 g each in sachets or 16 grams in sticks, 6 sticks or 20 sachets in a cardboard box).

Composition of gel:

  • active substance: aluminum phosphate gel 20%;
  • auxiliary components: sorbitol 70%, pectin, orange flavor, agar-agar 800, potassium sorbate, purified water, calcium sulfate dihydrate.

Pharmacological effect

Colloidal aluminum phosphate (gel) has a triple therapeutic effect, which is achieved through a combination of antacid, enveloping and sorbing effects. In addition, Fosfalugel has an analgesic effect.

  1. Sorption effect.Allows the drug to bind various pathogenic microorganisms and harmful substances in the lumen of the intestine, and take them out. In other words, Fosfalugel acts as a sorbent. The gel is able to bind bacteria, viruses, toxic substances that come from outside or formed in the body as a result of vital activity, as well as gases that are products of the processes of putrefaction and fermentation in the intestine. Phosphalugel has excellent safety performance, as it does not cause a strong alkalization of the digestive system juice and can not lead to increased production of hydrochloric acid in response to its binding and neutralization. In addition, the use of Phosphalugel for a long period of time does not lead to a disruption in the exchange of phosphorus.
  2. Enveloping action. It consists in the ability of colloidal particles of aluminum phosphate to be adsorbed on the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach and intestines, creating on it a special mucoid layer. This mucoid layer protects mucous membranes from aggressive action of hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and also toxic substances that enter the body from the outside or are produced as a result of metabolism. The protective effect on the mucous membranes of the digestive organs leads to normalization of the progression of the food lump through the intestine.
  3. Antacid effect. It consists in the binding of hydrochloric acid of gastric juice with its neutralization due to the formation of a salt - aluminum chloride. Neutralization of hydrochloric acid can reduce the acidity of gastric juice to normal values (pH from 3.5 to 5) within 10 minutes after ingestion of the gel. After reaching the normal acidity of the gastric juice, the neutralization reaction slows down, practically ceasing. And the remaining amount of active ingredient is spent on maintaining the normal acidity of gastric juice for a long time. This maintenance of acidity at a normal level is achieved due to the buffer properties of aluminum phosphate. Normalization of the pH of gastric juice leads to a decrease in the activity of the digestive enzyme pepsin.

Indications for use

What helps? Phosphalugel is used to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with moderate or high acidity. The drug is used in combination with other drugs or in the form of monotherapy.

  1. Effective in flatulence, heartburn, which occur due to improper diet, with excessive use of alcohol, nicotine, coffee.
  2. It is also used for gastrointestinal disorders, intoxications, intestinal infections, while taking medications that can cause digestive disorders.
  3. It is indicated for stomach ulcer / duodenal ulcer, acute or chronic gastritis with normal secretion or hypersecretion, with gastroesophageal reflux with complications and without, diaphragmatic hernia, syndrome of nonulcer dyspepsia, duodenal gastral reflux, functional diarrhea.

Contraindications

Despite the good tolerability of the drug, it has some contraindications for use, among which:

  • Chronic renal failure.

When reflux-esophagitis, ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, Fosfalugel is taken before bed or two hours after eating, with pain - immediately. With diaphragmatic hernia, the drug is recommended to be taken immediately after meals, as well as before going to bed, with enterocolitis - before eating twice a day, in case of sponges - before breakfast and before bedtime.

Adverse Reactions

Side effects from taking this medication are very rare, most often in bedridden patients or elderly patients, in the form of constipation.

Overdose

Because of the large amount of aluminum ions, there may be a decrease in intestinal motility. For treatment, laxatives should be used.

special instructions

In patients with concomitant renal failure, thirst, a decrease in blood pressure, a decrease in reflexes are possible.

Use with caution in high doses in elderly patients and in patients with impaired renal function (due to the possible risk of cumulation of aluminum phosphate leading to constipation).

Compatibility with other drugs

With the simultaneous use of citrates, ascorbic acid increases the absorption of aluminum from the digestive tract.

Aluminum preparations, which are used as antacids, interact with most drugs for oral administration by both modifying pH of gastric juice and rapid emptying of the stomach, and by adsorption to form complexes that are not absorbed.
