.Form of issue and composition
A substance that provides Biseptol with a curative effect is called co-trimoxazole. This name combines two active compounds, the ratio of which in one tablet is 5 to 1. Depending on the amount of such active ingredients, the preparation is presented in two dosages:
- Tablets 120 mg,in which there are 100 mg of sulfamethoxazole supplemented with 20 mg of trimethoprim.
- Tablets 480 mg,of which the patient receives sulfamethoxazole in an amount of 400 mg, and trimethoprim - in a dose of 80 mg.
Biseptol tablets are distinguished by a round flat shape, white (sometimes with yellow) color, and also the presence of risks and engraving Bs. They are packed in blisters of 20 pieces and are sold for 1 blister in a pack.
Pharmacological effect
Biseptol (480, 120 and 240 mg) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial drug that refers to sulfanilamide preparations. The combination of active substances interferes with the synthesis of folic acid, which is responsible for metabolic processes in microbial cells, as well as their division.
Co-trimoxazole does not kill pathogens of various diseases, but limits their reproduction, giving the immune system the ability to cope with pathogens. This explains the absence of a strong toxic effect during treatment with biseptol.
The drug is able to cope with approximately 40 types of pathogenic microorganisms, among which streptococcal and staphylococcal infections, cholera vibrio, toxoplasma, salmonella, chlamydia, E. coli and others. Anaerobic and mycobacteria, as well as viruses, the drug does not have an effect.
It is also used for primary and secondary prevention of pneumocystosis and toxoplasmosis in HIV carriers.
Indications for use
According to the manufacturer's instructions, Biseptol is prescribed in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases, which are caused by microorganisms that are sensitive to the medicine, namely:
- Gonorrhea;
- Otitis, sinusitis;
- Infections of soft tissues and skin, including pyoderma, furunculosis;
- Infections of the genitourinary system, including urethritis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, salpingitis;
- Various infections of the respiratory tract, including pneumonia, bronchitis, lung abscess, pleural empyema;
- Infections of the gastrointestinal tract, including abdominal paratyphoid, typhoid, bacterial cholera, dysentery, diarrhea.
Biseptol - an antibiotic or not?
According to the annotation, Biseptol is not an antibiotic. It is a bactericidal drug (it causes the death of a microbial cell), but it does not apply to antibiotics. The effect of the drug is due to the fact that it blocks the synthesis of folic acid, without which the microbial cell can not divide. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim supplement and reinforce each other in this mechanism.
Contraindications
Absolute contraindications:
- severe renal dysfunction in the absence of the ability to monitor the concentration of the drug in the blood plasma;
- hyperbilirubinemia in children;
- severe blood diseases;
- deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase;
- established damage to the liver parenchyma;
- severe renal failure;
- increased sensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as to sulfonamides.
Biseptol should not be taken to women during pregnancy and lactation.
Children do not prescribe the drug:

- bronchial asthma;
- deficiency of folic acid in the body;
- thyroid disease.
Application in pregnancy and lactation
At pregnancy the preparation should be appointed or nominated only in the event that the expected advantage from its or his application surpasses possible risk for a fetus, because both trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole penetrate the placental barrier and, thus, can affect the exchange of folic acid acid. In late pregnancy, the use of the drug should be avoided because of the possible risk of developing nuclear jaundice in newborns.
Due to the fact that trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole penetrate into breast milk, the use of co-trimoxazole during the lactation period is contraindicated.

Reviews
We picked up some of the people's opinions about Biseptol:
- Olga. "Biseptol" is considered to be an old, reliable, proven drug that helps in solving problems not only in patients with respiratory organs, but also with ulcers, barley, and diarrhea. Treated with success to themselves and their children. I know that it is bad for the liver, because it consumed it only after eating and squeezed milk. In the battle with bronchopulmonary diseases, it is necessary to take 4 tablets a day, 2 at the same time for 3-5 days, depending on the severity. It is enough for abscesses 1-2 single intake of 2 tablets, and from diarrhea it saves from one reception in the same quantity of tablets. Wonderful drug!
- Tatyana. That's right, if dogs are treated, it means that the person will also be suitable. Biseptol is better to refrain from giving to children (up to 8 years) - boys. It acts on the testicles. This was told to me in 1982 by one of the most intelligent and competent therapists. And in the future it can be used in treatment. Bronchitis was treated earlier without the use of antibiotics. And they coped well And now they all put antibiotics on. Immediately allergy, hormones and the process is started.
- Ruslan. Antibiotics kill micro-organisms, and antimicrobials are not directly lethal to them, but violate their metabolism, so they die. This drug, for example, disrupts the formation of folic acid and dihydrofolic acid among microorganisms. This distinguishes drugs of this group from antibiotics in that they do not destroy the useful microflora so much and have fewer side effects.
- Irina. This is a very good medicine. The elder child often suffered from cough during the cold season, the throat began to ache almost every 2-3 weeks. The treatment took quite a long time. Very much helped or assisted these tablets. There are small tablets for children, but my child asked to pound them and take them as a powder. They are quite bitter, but here the effect of them is different when coughing. I know that even acquaintances who suffer from bronchitis respond very well to this medication. Itself took "Biseptol" for adults with a cough, too, helped. Only here the size of tablets for adults is very large.
- Edwin. I used to use biseptol frequently, especially in the winter, when I'm freezing, before sleeping, two tablets and in the morning are bodrenky. But one day a good doctor after a surgery has jinxed and now I have blimps and itch. I do not use them for 17 years, but I would like to return to it, doxycycline as a dead poultice.
