Nervous Teeth of the Eye: Causes and Treatment

click fraud protection

The nervous tic of the eye is an involuntary contraction (twitching) of small facial muscles around the eye. The medical name of this condition is blepharospasm. Some people face this problem once in a lifetime, others suffer for years. This is a very common problem of modern man due to the high level of intensity of life, being in a state of increased stress. Much more often, the disease occurs in children than in adults. Sometimes the nervous tic of the eye passes by itself, without the use of medicines (and it happens quite often). But it happens that blepharospasm is repeated many times, becomes almost a daily companion of life, to get rid of which without the help of a doctor is not possible. And then the person goes to the neurologist.

The nervous tic of the eye can be a functional disorder, in this case it does not have a morphological basis, but can be a symptom of organic brain damage, the first bell of some disease of the central nervous system. Therefore, one should not turn a blind eye to such a state, it is necessary to identify possible causes of a tick, for it is better to consult with a specialist who correctly appoints the patient the necessary treatment.

Causes

Various emotional disorders in the child contribute to the occurrence of blepharospasm.

By itself, blepharospasm is a manifestation of the violation of the processes of nervous regulation, on which the contractile activity of the eye muscles depends. T. e. the eye itself is healthy in this condition, and the problem in the nervous system. Possible causes of this condition include the following:

  1. Violations of the emotional sphere (neurosis, fright, overexertion, increased mental stress, etc.): perhaps the most common cause of the development of the nervous tic of the eye. In fact, any stress factor can cause the development of blepharospasm.
  2. Organic diseases of the brain: the nervous tic of the eye can be one of the symptoms of such diseases as multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, cerebral circulation disorder, vegetovascular dystonia. It can also be a consequence of a traumatic brain injury or a previous infection of the brain (meningitis, encephalitis).
  3. The imbalance of microelements: we are talking about the content of magnesium and calcium in the body. Their deficiency can provoke twitching in various muscle groups, including in the ocular.
  4. Hereditary predisposition: tick Tourette can debut with the development of blepharospasm.
  5. Long-term use of certain drugs (neuroleptics, psychostimulants).
  6. Banal fatigue and overwork of the muscles of the eye (in persons who work long hours at the computer, embroiderers, jewelers, etc.).
  7. Very rarely, the cause may be helminthic infestation (more common in children).

Symptoms

The main manifestation of a tick is the sudden appearance of a periodic contraction of the external muscle of the eye. Reduction is involuntary, almost uncontrolled, i.e. it can not be suppressed by effort of will. The degree of contraction can be different: from the hardly visible for the surrounding lungs, the jerking of the eyelids to the complete closing of the eye gap. The amplitude of the nervous tic of the eye is also individual.

Blepharospasm usually occurs during or immediately after emotional overexertion and ceases as soon as a person calms down. The more "fixation" occurs at the very sensation of twitching, the more a person tries to influence spasm of muscles by effort of will, the more painfully (morally) the nervous tic of the eye is transferred. By itself, muscle contraction does not bring pain. During sleep, no tick occurs.

For some people, the nervous tic of the eye becomes the cause of a closure in itself: a visual defect attracts the attention of strangers on the street and in transport, it causes a lot of inconvenience. This leads to aggravation of neuroticism, which, in turn, can exacerbate the manifestations of blepharospasm.

Features in children

Children have less stable psyche compared to adults. They react more violently even to insignificant stressful effects. In the preschool period and the period of puberty, these features are manifested particularly clearly. Therefore, it is in these age groups that the nervous tic of the eye is observed more often. The first visit to kindergarten and parting with my mother, September 1st for a first-grader, conflicts in the family, hormonal changes in the body - all these are the most frequent causes of the development of blepharospasm in children. Among children's neurologists, even the word "tick of a first-grader" is used.
Little children usually do not notice the development of eye twitches, the first respond to others. Then the defect begins to be realized by the child himself. The rest of the manifestations of blepharospasm are the same as in adults.

If the tick in the child is not a symptom of any disease, then it usually goes on independently during the normalization of the psycho-emotional state.

Treatment

If the nervous tic of the eye is one of the symptoms of another disease, then the treatment of the latter becomes simultaneously a treatment for a tick.

If the development of blepharospasm is associated with a violation of trace elements in the body, then in this case a balanced diet enriched with products containing magnesium and calcium can help. It is recommended to eat nuts, currants, cherries, watermelons, bananas, peas and beans, cheese, cottage cheese, fish, oats and buckwheat. It is possible to use such drugs as Magne B6 and calcium gluconate.
To reduce the burden on the eyes, it is necessary to reduce as much as possible the time of watching TV and staying at the computer. It is desirable to regularly do a relaxing gymnastics for the eyes.

From non-drug methods to ease the condition helps compresses for eyes from laurel leaves, leaves of geranium, honey. Such compresses can be done several times a day, alternating components. Common baths with sea salt and aromatic oils (lavender, lemon balm, cinnamon, basil, ylang-ylang, geranium) help to relax the body in general and in such an indirect way reduce twitching.
All methods aimed at normalizing the emotional sphere of the patient with the nervous tic of the eye will have a positive effect on the treatment. Moderate physical activity, full sleep, walking tours, trips outside the city, the emergence of new hobbies, "heart-to-heart talk" - all this contributes to the settlement of the functions of the nervous system. The ability to relax and turn off for a while from the outside world is something that a patient with a nervous tic eye should learn.

From drugs with blepharospasm shows the use of sedatives, especially the plant series. Valerian, motherwort, chamomile, mint, lemon balm, combined preparations such as Persen, Novo-Passita, Notti, Dormyplant, - the assortment is very diverse. If necessary, the doctor can prescribe and more powerful sedatives (Thioridazine, Eglonil, Coaxil, Adaptol, Mebikar, etc.). Sometimes drugs are needed to "make up" the brain: with the nervous tic of the eye it is Fenibut (noophen), Pikamilon, Pantogam (calcium gopentenate, pantokaltsin), Glycine (glycid). Useful can be acupuncture, massage sessions and physiotherapy. Perhaps, a visit to the psychotherapist will be productive. The approach to the patient is individual, and the treatment should be prescribed only by a doctor.
In cases where the above listed methods do not work, it is possible to use injections of botulinum toxin (botox). It causes blockade of the conduction of nerve impulses to the muscles of the eye, as a result of which the twitching stops.

For children it is important not to focus on the problem of a tick. They do not realize their visual defect, accordingly they do not experience moral discomfort. In children, even more than in adults, the probability of self-healing is high. To stabilize the psycho-emotional background in children, enough affectionate attitude in the family, patience and attention from parents, the normalization of the classroom and rest. In some cases, as well as adults, plant sedatives can be prescribed. Naturally, this approach to the treatment of blepharospasm in children is used only after excluding a number of other diseases, a symptom of which may be a tick.

Although the nervous tic of the eye does not carry an immediate threat to human health, it can not be ignored and ignored. Do not neglect the signals of your body! All in your hands!
