Pharmacological effect

Indocollir is a local ophthalmic preparation with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

The active component of the drug is indomethacin - a drug substance of a group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It reduces the activity of cyclooxygenase, the enzyme involved in the formation of prostaglandins (inflammatory mediators). With topical application indomethacin reduces the intensity of the inflammatory process, and also reduces the severity pain syndrome due to the inhibition of generation and pain impulse along the nervous structures. Indomethacin in addition to inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins also reduces the production of thromboxane A, which can lead to an increase in bleeding time.

When instillation of Indocollir drops into the conjunctival sac, the systemic absorption of indomethacin is insignificant. There may be some increase in the systemic absorption of indomethacin with prolonged use of high doses of Indocollir.

Indications for use

What helps? Indocollir drops are prescribed to patients for treatment and prevention of the following conditions:

  • treatment of non-infectious conjunctivitis;
  • inhibition of miosis during surgery for cataract;
  • prevention of cystic edema of the macula after operations for cataracts;
  • treatment and prevention of inflammatory processes after surgical interventions on the eyeball;
  • treatment and prevention of post-traumatic inflammatory process with penetrating and non-penetrating injuries of the eyeball (as an addition to local antimicrobial therapy).

Contraindications

These eye drops are contraindicated in such sitings:

  1. The period of breastfeeding;
  2. From 6 to 9 months of pregnancy;
  3. Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
  4. Hypersensitivity to NSAIDs, including acetylsalicylic acid, manifested by acute rhinitis, bouts of bronchial asthma, hives.

With caution, Indocollir is recommended for patients with hemophilia, a tendency to bleeding and other diseases that cause a clotting disorder blood and lengthening the time of bleeding; epithelial herpetic keratitis (including in anamnesis); marked violations of the liver.

Application in pregnancy and lactation

Currently, there are no adequate and strictly controlled clinical studies on the safety of Indocollir in pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding). However, the drug can be used in the first 5 months of pregnancy in the event that the intended benefit of therapy for the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus. Starting from the 6th month of pregnancy, it is not recommended to prescribe the drug; this can lead to impaired vascular function and kidney function in the fetus.

Indomethacin is excreted in breast milk, so if it is necessary to use the drug during lactation decide whether to stop breastfeeding or avoid it during breastfeeding.

Instructions for use

The instructions for use indicate that before instillation of the Indocollir preparation, contact lenses should be removed; they can be installed 15 minutes after instillation.

  1. To prevent cystic edema of the macula, the drug is instilled 1 drop 3-4 times / day for 1 month after the operation.
  2. To inhibit intraoperative miosis, the drug is instilled in 1 drop into the conjunctival sac for 2 hours at intervals of 30 minutes (4 times) before the operation.
  3. At other indications appoint 1 drop 3-4 times / day depending on the severity of the condition. The course of treatment can last from 1 to 4 weeks.

The bottle must be closed after each use. Do not touch the tip of the pipette to the eye.

Side effects

Rarely - mild or moderate burning immediately after instillation, visual clarity may be temporarily impaired. Perhaps the development of skin itch or redness of the skin. With prolonged use, systemic side effects may occur.

Overdose

If the dose specified in the instructions is met, the drug overdose develops very rarely. With prolonged use of the drug and uncontrolled instillation of drops, it is possible to develop systemic adverse reactions as described above.

Patients who, after applying the drug, temporarily lose their clear vision, it is not recommended to drive or work with a complex machinery, machines or any other complex equipment that requires a clear vision, immediately after instillation of the drug.

Drug Interactions

  1. Simultaneous reception with saluretics (furosemide, etc.) and beta-adrenoblockers weakens their effect.
  2. The drug can enhance the effect of indirect anticoagulants (drugs that prevent the formation of blood clots), as well as lithium.
  3. The simultaneous use of indomethacin with beta-blockers and saluretic can weaken the effect of the latter.
  4. If necessary, apply with other eye drops, incl. glucocorticosteroid, it is recommended to take a break between applications of the drugs for at least 5 minutes.
  5. Eye drops Indocollir should not be used simultaneously with other NSAIDs, especially diflunisal and acetylsalicylic acid in high doses (from 3 g per day) because of the high risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
