Biography
Thubten Sopa Rinpoche ( date of birth - January 1946 in Thami Khumbu, the state of Nepal) is the second spiritual mentor of the community - the international network of Buddhist centers "Fund for the Maintenance of the Mahayana Tradition"( hereinafter - FPMT) since 1984to the present( his predecessor, Tubten Yeshe).It is widely known under the name Lama Sopa - the tutor of Tibetan Buddhism in the Gelug tradition.
Thupten Rinpoche comes from the Sherpa family. Even in his childhood, he was recognized as a tulku of the Laudo-lama( Nyingma tradition), who meditated in a cave above the village of Thami. From there he was given the title of "Rinpoche".Thupten Sopa, as the predecessor of the Laudo Lama( on the line of rebirth) belongs to the tradition of the Sakya.
Lama Sopa Rinpoche received monastic vows at the monastery of Dungkar, located in Tibet, where he settled in 1957.As a result of the Tibetan uprising in 1959, he had to flee to India, as the Chinese army put a lot of pressure on the monasteries. And his spiritual guide, Geshe Rabten, entrusted the care of him to another reborn lama named Lama Yeshe. Lama Sopa Rinpoche received teachings and knowledge from several high lamas, including the instructors of the Dalai Lama XIV.
Around the 70's. XX century in northern India, Lama Rinpoche met his mentor with an American - Rashevskaya Zina, granddaughter of Sergey Rashevsky. At her big request, they began to give her instructions in Buddhism. This event formed the basis for the creation of the future organization of the PTMT.
In 1973, together with Lama Yeshe, Lama Rinpoche founded the Kopan Monastery in Nepal, located near Kathmandu. Here special attention is paid to the training of foreigners. It was the monastery of Copan that became the first center of the future network of Buddhist centers of the FPMT.
In March 1984, after the departure( death) of Lama Yeshe, Lama Sopa became the spiritual instructor of the FPMT.
In 1986, Lama Sopa met with the previous Panchen Lama in the country of Nepal, and then in Tibet.
Lama Sopa spent a lot of time in Australia. His permanent place of residence was the United States. Twice Rinpoche visited Russia( in 2003, 2015).

Awards
Sopa Rinpoche has awards: Cavalier of the Mongol Order of the Polar Star.
Along with the constant concern for Buddhist centers and the preaching of moral teachings around the world, it supports large projects to help refugees from Tibet in India. In 2010, for his significant contribution to the restoration of Buddhism in Mongolia, he was awarded the Mongolian Order "Polar Star".

As a Buddhist mentor, Lama Sopa is the author of a number of books. They are mainly published in the foreign publishing house "Wisdom Publications"( Wisdom Publications).The Russian publishing house "Open World" translated four books from English into Russian. And the most detailed biography of Lama Sopa is compiled and published by Jamyang Wangmo under the name "Laudo Lama".
