What is the purpose of Ketosteril: instructions for use

Ketosteril is a combined preparation that provides the supply of essential amino acids with minimal introduction of nitrogen.

The components of the drug are transaminated into L-amino acids, splitting urea. It promotes the utilization of nitrogen-containing metabolic products, protein anabolism, reduction of urea concentration in the serum, regulation of nitrogen metabolism. The drug lowers the concentration of potassium, magnesium and phosphate ions in the blood.

Form of issue and composition

Ketosteril is available in the form of film-coated tablets of yellow color (20 pcs. in blisters, 5 blisters in sealed bags, in a cardboard bundle 1 package).

Active substances of the preparation (in 1 tablet):

  • DL-methyl-oxo-2-calcium valerinate (a-keto analogue of isoleucine) 67 mg, Methyl 4-oxo-2-calcium valerinate (a-keto analogue of leucine) 101 mg, Oxo-2-phenyl-3-calcium propionate (a-keto analogue of phenylalanine) 68 mg, Methyl-oxo-2-calcium butyrate (a-keto analogue of valine) 86 mg, DL-hydroxy-2-calcium methylbutyrate (a-hydroxy analog methionine) 59 mg, L-lysine monoacetate 105 mg, L-threonine 53 mg, L-tryptophan 23 mg, L-histidine 38 mg, L-tyrosine 30 mg.

The total nitrogen content is 36 mg. The calcium content is 50 mg (1.25 mmol).

Auxiliary components: povidone soluble, povidone, macrogol 6000, silicon dioxide colloid, talc, corn starch, magnesium stearate.

Sheath composition: copolymer of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate (eudragit E12.5), titanium dioxide, triacetin, macrogol 6000, talc, quinoline yellow dye (E104).

Pharmacological effect

Combined amino acid preparation, which provides the body with essential amino acids, while not burdening the body with nitrogen. The drug introduced ketone analogues of amino acids, which naturally transaminate to L-amino acids.

The drug has a disinfecting effect on nitrogen-containing products of metabolism, promotes protein anabolism against the background of a decrease in serum concentrations of urea. When taking Ketosteril, a decrease in plasma concentrations of phosphate, potassium and magnesium is observed. Sometimes taking the drug can help delay the date of dialysis, improving the condition with CRF.

Indications for use

The drug is indicated for use in chronic renal failure for the prevention and treatment of disorders provoked by defects in protein metabolism, as well as with pronounced protein and energy deficiency.

Contraindications

  1. Disturbance of amino acid metabolism;
  2. Hypercalcemia;
  3. Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Ketosteril contains phenylalanine, so caution should be observed when it is prescribed to patients with hereditary phenylketonuria.

Application in pregnancy and lactation

There is no sufficient experience of using Ketosteril in patients during lactation and pregnancy.

Instructions for use

The instructions for use indicate that Ketosteril is administered orally, usually 3 times / day during meals. Tablets should be swallowed without chewing. It is used during the entire period when the glomerular filtration rate is less than 25 ml / min.

  • Adults and children 3 years of age and older are prescribed 1 tablet / 5 kg of body weight / day or 100 mg / kg of body weight / day. For adults with a body weight of 70 kg, the dose is usually 4-8 tab. 3 times / day.

In the pre-dialysis period, the protein content in food is recommended not more than 40 g / day, depending on the degree of chronic renal failure.

In patients who are on dialysis, protein intake must comply with accepted recommendations.

The recommended protein content in food for children 3-10 years is 1.4-0.8 g / kg / day, for children over 10 years old - 1-0.6 g / kg / day.

Side effects

Basically, the drug is well tolerated, in some cases, the development of hypercalcemia is possible.

In case of hypersensitivity to any component, there is a possibility of allergic reactions.

Overdose

There is no information about overdose.

special instructions

  1. It is required to provide sufficient caloric content of food.
  2. It is necessary to regularly monitor the calcium content and control the decrease in serum phosphate levels.
  3. Ketosteril should be taken with food to improve its absorption and conversion to the corresponding amino acids.
  4. In patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug in some cases, the occurrence of allergic reactions.
  5. When hypercalcemia is recommended to reduce the dose of vitamin D taken. If hypercalcemia persists, then reduce the dose of the drug Ketosteril, as well as other sources of calcium.

Drug Interactions

When Ketosteril is used in combination with calcium-containing drugs, an increase in the serum calcium content is possible.

In accordance with the reduction of uremic symptoms under the influence of the drug, the dose of simultaneously used aluminum hydroxide should be proportionally reduced.

In order not to violate absorption in the intestine, it is not recommended to take the drug simultaneously with the preparations forming with calcium, sparingly soluble compounds (for example, quinolines, tetracyclines, preparations containing fluorine, iron and estramustine). Between the intake of such drugs and Ketosteril should be observed an interval of at least 2 hours.

Reviews

We picked up some feedback from people about the Ketosteril preparation:

  1. Oksana. A great product, which in its composition contains an optimal ratio of amino acids, which are indispensable for healthy people, as well as for patients with chronic renal insufficiency. More than half of them are presented in the form of keto analogs that do not contain an amino group, which are converted into the corresponding amino acids in the body, promoting the utilization of urea. Ketosteril allows to provide in conditions of protein deficiency the need of patients with CRF in essential amino acids with minimal introduction of nitrogen. Therefore, patients with CRF, sometimes can not limit themselves to eating, with proper intake of ketosteril. I recommend patients with chronic kidney failure!

Almost all patients who received it noted a gradual improvement in the general condition, confirmed by laboratory tests.

Negative responses about Ketosteril practically are not present, but some patients marked, that the improvement of a status goes too slowly, that, most likely, has been connected with severity of disease.

Analogues

At present, Kestosteril has no analogues, in view of the unique composition of the drug, as well as its ability to reduce the content of toxic products in the blood, formed during the exchange of proteins.

Before using analogues, consult your doctor.

Storage conditions and shelf life

Store in a dry place, protected from light, out of reach of children, at a temperature of no higher than 25 ° C. Shelf life - 3 years.
