What is myopic astigmatism?

From Latin, astigmatism is translated as a "wandering gaze or lack of focus." Physicians today define the disease as a visual impairment, in which the foci of light rays are formed in different parts relative to the retina of the eye, making the image distorted.

It happens that astigmatism is often confused with myopia. The similarity of these violations does exist: in the first and in the second case the person sees poorly, the objects spread out, the head turns. And only an ophthalmologist can determine: what exactly became the reason for which vision deteriorates: astigmatism or short-sightedness. The disease, when these diseases occur together, is called "myopic astigmatism."

Astigmatism in children

The reason for the occurrence of myopic astigmatism is often called a genetic predisposition, that is, heredity. It occurs at an early age, and can be diagnosed immediately after birth. At a later age, excessive eye strain can also trigger the development of the disease. Especially if they are monotonous. That's why it is recommended from time to time to change the child's load on the eyes: first read, then run, make something with your hands, and only then watch cartoons.

Less often myopic astigmatism occurs due to trauma, unsuccessful surgery or improper hygiene, when the infection enters the eye and causes a strong inflammation of the cornea, deforming its shape.

In any case, early diagnosis of the disease is half the success. So ophthalmologists assure and call parents who have a tendency to astigmatism, to monitor children, trying to identify the disease by indirect signs. Complain children, most likely will not be - a person is accustomed to get used to vague images of objects.

We define with the help of the test!There is a simple method that will help determine the presence of myopic astigmatism. On the notebook, draw two parallel lines. Show the child, and then turn the sheet the other way. Ask: how does he see the lines? If it is still clear - with eyesight order. If the lines begin to "swim" - it is possible that there is a violation.

Symptoms:

  • headache (especially after a long load on the eyes);
  • objects become indistinct, swim and double;
  • in order to see the subject clearly, I want to delay the eyelid;
  • eye fatigue syndrome;
  • the schoolboy complains that he does not see well from the last desk;
  • the object has to be brought closer to the eyes.

What kinds are there?

If the child is diagnosed with myopic astigmatism, then the second step that the doctors will do is to find out the degree of focus disruption by examining the meridians of the eye. There is a simple and complex form. Simple myopic astigmatism is inherent in such a state, when in one part of the eye there is normal vision, and in the second - nearsightedness. With the complex form of the disease of both eyes, both the meridian of the eye "float", and in everyone there is short-sightedness. True, different - in one meridian minus a little more, in the second - less.

And a simple and complex form is characterized by uneasy general decrease in visual acuity, but significant distortion of objects. As in the kingdom of crooked mirrors, everything that a person sees seems stretched or bifurcated. As a result, a person, wishing to independently "adjust" the clarity, pulls his eyelids, bows his head, bringing the object closer to himself.

Ophthalmologists distinguish three degrees of severity of the disease:

  1. The first weak degree is up to 3d. It can flow almost imperceptibly, and will be fixed only on a professional examination with a doctor.
  2. The second, the average, from 3D to 6D. It necessarily requires correction and is visible to others.
  3. High starts from 6 D and above. Such a pathology of vision significantly changes the shape of objects in humans. Instead of a circle, he can see an oval, instead of a square, a rectangle and so on. This form of the disease requires prompt correction and constant monitoring by an ophthalmologist.

Attention!A weak degree of astigmatism is asymptomatic and often does not reveal itself. Nevertheless, to identify it in children is especially important! The launched form of the disease is fraught not only with the fall of vision, but with a lazy eye syndrome, when the muscles weaken, the eye "floats," and the child gradually develops a squint.

Whether the army is taking this disease

Many people ask themselves: are complex myopic astigmatism taken in the army? It is noteworthy, but to this day the diagnosis - myopic astigmatism is the reason for postponing the army, or even issuing a "white ticket". The reason to recognize the draftee completely unfit for the category of fitness D, is considered myopic astigmatism from 6D and above. With the category of validity B (a valid one is considered limited), the conscript is sent to the reserve of the armed forces - the doctors recognized myopia of moderate severity. With a weak degree from 2D to 4D, doctors believe that a young man is fit for military service and send him to serve, appropriating the category B. True, with little restrictions on the type of activity in the army.

Methods of treatment

A weak degree of the disease does not require serious medical intervention, it is enough to connect gymnastics for the eyes, wear special glasses or contact lenses for prevention.

Most often for the correction of vision appoint special glasses for children with myopic astigmatism of a weak degree. You can not select them yourself, you can choose them in the departments of finished optics too. Points will have to be constantly changed, adjusting to the age-related changes in the visual system.

Contact lenses (for the treatment of myopic astigmatism using toric lenses) are used extremely rarely, because a child is very difficult to care for them correctly. As an alternative, the use of one-day contact lenses.

When astigmatism is detected in a higher form, surgery is indispensable - both glasses and lenses can cause dizziness and headaches. But the operation is possible only after 18-20 years, when the eye is fully formed.

Popular methods of treating a simple form of the disease of both eyes:

  • Exercises for the eyes that train the eye muscles;
  • complex therapy: the child is given vitamins, supplements, food, enriched with manganese, chromium, zinc, copper and selenium;
  • a selection of special glasses or contact lenses;
  • physiotherapy: measures aimed at strengthening the eye muscles, as well as stimulation of the eyes, improving blood circulation;
  • Eye surgery.

Methods of surgical intervention

Modern surgical intervention for the treatment of complex myopic astigmatism is of several kinds. The main advantage of operations is a complete and unconditional victory over astigmatism, restoration of vision and lifelong effect.
Keratomy is a method where small incisions are neatly applied to the cornea of the eye. After the generation of tissues, the cornea changes the curvature, the foci aligns.

Keratectomy of photorefractions (PRK) consists in exposure to the eye with a laser. A laser beam aligns the surface of the cornea, completely removing the top layer. The operation allows you to get rid of astigmatism without a trace. The disadvantage of PRK is that it is impossible to do surgery immediately on both eyes, and the period after the operation is difficult for patients: for several days the eye is actually an open wound. Eyes are watered, cut, afraid of light. After surgery, doctors recommend wearing special protective lenses, until the cornea finally heals. Typically, the full recovery period is six months. But then the patient is happy all his life with a clear image and bright colors.

Lasik (LASIK or laser keratomileus) is, perhaps, the most modern way to correct myopic astigmatism. The cornea is aligned with the laser in a matter of minutes. In this case, not the entire top layer is removed, as in PRK, but only individual sections. Then the laser "burns out" the curved parts of the cornea and the flaps of the upper layer of the eye return to their place. The seams are not superimposed (the eye heals itself). The undoubted advantages of LASIK are that the operation passes quickly, is easily transferred, at the same time you can correct both eyes.

The healing process takes only one or two hours and literally on the day of surgery the patient begins to see objects much better. And after a few weeks, vision achieves the maximum improvement.

Note!There are also contraindications to LASIK operation, and the doctor should warn the patients about them. In particularly difficult cases, corneal transplantation or lens replacement may be required to treat myopic astigmatism. So any method of treatment should be discussed with a doctor in advance.

Gymnastics for the eyes

The best prevention for the eyes, as doctors have proved, is gymnastics, which ophthalmologists like to assign to children from 3 years and older. Conduct it with the child in the form of a game, periodically changing the exercises. Enough 10 minutes a day, so that the muscles of the eyes are significantly strengthened, the vision is better.

Exercise # 1

Show the child a book, with clear lines. Let him lead his eyes in letters, after your finger. Replace the book with a white sheet. Repeat the exercises 10 to 100 times.

Exercise # 2

Tie the eye that sees worse with a bandage. Spread the bead on the table, ask the baby to gather a house or a sun from beads. Change your eyes, and repeat the exercise.

Exercise 3

Take a white sheet of paper and start drawing on it a clear and large circle, an oval or a square. The child's task is to follow your drawing, repeating it with your eyes.

Exercise 4

Put a big dot on the window. Ask the child to look at the point, and then outside. Repeat the exercise 10 to 50 times per lesson.
