Causes of coughing in an adult and a child

Cough occurs in inflammatory, mechanical, chemical and thermal stimulation of cough receptors. In inflammation, edema and hyperemia, as well as exudative processes irritate the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. Such irritants can come from both the respiratory tract itself, as, for example, with laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis and bronchiolitis, and alveoli, for example, pneumonia or lung abscess. Mechanical irritants are air particles inhaled with air, for example dust, or a violation of the patency of the airways due to their squeezing or toning.

Thus, usually the causes of coughing in adults and children can be catarrhal inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, tobacco smoking, inhalation of air with an admixture of dust from the environment, stresses that turn into neurosis( cough of neurogenic origin), foreign bodies entering the trachea during breathingor careless eating.

Because the causes of cough are different, depending on what provokes it, it will be the basis for the strategy of the chosen cough treatment - methods, recipes, tips, remedies and methods.

Cough dry and wet

Cough by nature can be dry and moist , ie with phlegm and without it. With phlegm cough productive, moist, with the passage of the mucous discharge from the bronchi, bringing relief to the patient. A strong dry cough is not productive, it is usually: a strong, barking, painful and paroxysmal cough without sputum and not bringing relief. For the patient to be able to clear his throat becomes a problem number one, a fit of coughing, and even more so the night cough is torturous, does not give an adult or a child the opportunity to sleep, relax and restore strength.

Here we consider the principles of cough treatment for colds and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system. Therefore, the cough can also be with an increased temperature of the body and without the temperature , i.e. with its normal figures - 36.7.It depends on the nature of the course of the disease and the severity of the inflammatory process in the body, as well as on one's own protective features of the human immune system.

Principles of cough treatment

Due to the fact that a patient has a dry or wet cough, two main approaches can be distinguished in his treatment:

with a dry cough need to alleviate the patient's condition by removing paroxysmal cough with suppressive antitussives and tablets, while stimulating the accumulation and discharge of sputum from the lungs, i.e. to translate the cough from dry to wet;

with a damp cough need to help the body dilute sputum for more easy removal from the body.

In addition, has to be taken into account for the temperature of the body, because in this case the procedures related to heating, heating baths, compressions, grindings have to be deferred until the temperature figures are normalized.

Tips for official medicine

A coughing cough against the cold is normal. In most cases, it does not require treatment and passes simultaneously with the disappearance of the disease. In other cases, for example, bronchitis, cough can be strong and persistent, with the release of viscous sputum. In such a situation, sputum liquefaction may be a necessary and very effective way to alleviate the condition of the patient

First: try to drink as much fluid as possible - a generous drink restores the body's water balance, disturbed by the disease, and largely contributes to the dilution of phlegm. When coughing, sore throat, pharyngitis is especially useful to drink alkaline mineral water( for example, Borjomi), the chemical composition of which also facilitates the recovery of sputum and acceleration of recovery. It is recommended to enrich the food with light, but high-calorie food, as well as vegetables and fruits.

The second: for colds and coughs it is useful to conduct a course of inhalations. Inhalations are shown to older children and adults. Children of an early age( up to 3-4 years) should not be inhaled - this can cause them to suffocate. For inhalation, take a tablespoon of leaves of mother-and-stepmother, chamomile, sage, thyme and pour them with boiling water in any voluminous vessel. In the infusion, add a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of menthol or eucalyptus oil. Such inhalation can be carried out several times a day.

Third: with persistent cough with viscous sputum( most likely it is tracheitis or bronchitis), it is recommended to take medications for sputum liquefaction: expectorant and mucolytic agents. Many of them are also available in adult forms, or can be used in adults at a certain dosage. We recommend to pay attention to preparations of vegetable origin, as well as mucolytics.

Mucolytics are taken in case there is sputum, but it is viscous and therefore excreted with difficulty.

Expectorants should be taken when coughing produces a small amount of sputum( scant sputum) - they stimulate the secretion of sputum by the glands of the bronchi, while making it more fluid, and also strengthen the cough reflex - it helps to clear the airways for colds or bronchitis.

Antitussives are prescribed only by the attending physician - they can cause serious adverse reactions. The modern and safest drug from this group is Kodelak-fito, which has a complex effect: it cracks the cough, but makes it more productive and therefore less painful and more effective. Kodelak-phyto is used mainly with a strong dry cough, which sometimes occurs against the background of influenza or other ARI.This drug is suitable for treating both children and adults. Reception of this drug is stopped when sputum appears( usually on the 2nd-3rd day of the common cold).

Before starting any of these medications, we recommend that you read the contents of the instructions for using the medication carefully. If, in spite of the treatment undertaken, the cough does not go through after 1-2 weeks, you should consult a doctor for examination and treatment correction.

Expectorants and mucolytic agents should not be taken concomitantly with antitussives - this can lead to congestion of the bronchi with phlegm.
