Method Bates, or How to get rid of stress and anxiety

The first thing about which it is now time to talk is the definition of the reference state of our psyche when it is in a state of rest, but it is not a dream. What is this peace, what should we strive for, what is the purpose, how is peace felt and what can it be compared with? It's hard to imagine that the main base, or the standard of mental rest and relaxation, was laid not by anyone, but by

American ophthalmologist William Horatio Bates, of course, this is my personal opinion, but based on life observations and empirical practice. So let me introduce the unique method of Bates in the field of how to get rid of stress, anxiety and depression at home by yourself and in ways.

Brieflyabout the author - William Horatio Bates

William Horatio Bates( December 23, 1860 - July 10, 1931) - a doctor ophthalmologist, the inventor of the original non-drug method of restoring vision through relaxation and a set of exercises. He was born in Newark, New Jersey. He received his medical education at Cornell in 1881, a doctorate in medical sciences from the American College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1885.Bates started his practice in New York, worked for some time as an assistant doctor at the Manhattan Hospital for the treatment of diseases of the organs of vision and hearing. Between 1886 and 1888 Bates worked as a staff doctor at the Belleville Psychiatric Hospital. From 1886 to 1896, Bates is also a full-time physician in the New York Eye Hospital, working in several other US hospitals. In 1886-1891, he teaches ophthalmology at the New York Hospital Research Institute for PhD students.

In 1896, Bates decides to leave for several years his work in the hospital because of the need for experimental work. In 1902 Bates went to work in the London Charing Cross Hospital. Two years later, he began to practice private practice in Grand Forks( Dakota), which continues for six years. In 1910, he held the post of physician for the care of visually impaired patients at the Harlem Hospital in New York City and worked there until 1922.

The main purpose of the Bates method

The main purpose of the Bates system is to relieve the stress of the external eye muscles, with the elimination of which the abnormality of refraction disappears - myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The root cause of all states of refraction anomalies, according to Bates, is mental stress, so in his system, so many exercises are of a mental rather than a physical nature. The greater part of them is directed towards the removal of mental stress.

The main axiom of the methodical system of U. G. Bates

"When the psyche is able to remember ideally any manifestation of the senses, it is always perfectly relaxed. At the same time, when the eyes are open, vision is normal, and when they are closed and covered with palms to completely exclude light, a completely black field is seen, that is, nothing is visible at all. If you can clearly recall the ticking of the clock, some smell or taste, your psyche will come to an ideal state of rest. Then, if you close your eyes and cover them with your hands, you will see absolute blackness. If your memory for a sense of touch can be compared to reality, you will not see anything other than blackness, if you completely exclude light. The same would happen if you clearly remembered some musical tact. "

How to get rid of stress, anxiety and depression at home

Bates and all his followers made the main emphasis on an exercise called palming, which allows not only to relieve tension from the eyes, but also is the basis for a large number of exercises for mental presentation.

The main exercise - Palming

Palmning( English "palm" - "palm").Straighten the fingers of one hand and place your hand on your face. Place the little finger of the other hand across the base of the four open fingers of the first hand( hands thus form something similar to the inverted letter V).The intersection of the bases of the little fingers forms, as it were, the eyelet of the glasses and must accordingly be located where the arch of the spectacles is usually located on the bridge of the nose. The cavities of the palms will automatically be located exactly above the orbits of your eyes. Keep your eyes closed during palming. Eliminate tension in the fingers, relax your wrists, elbows. To do this, put them on your knees or on the table so that your neck is aligned with your spine. You can put a pillow on your knees, and on your pillow you already have elbows. If you need to bend forward, bend at the waist, but keep straight in the neck and spine. The position of the palms of each person will differ from the position of the palms of the other person. Try to find an acceptable position for you.

Palming gives rest to the eyes, the psyche, the nervous system, the whole body. You need to do it a little, but often.

Secrets, tricks and tricks of

"The smaller the area of black color a person can imagine, the higher the degree of his relaxation. Ideally, this is the area of the black dot. "

Therefore, during palming, you can and need to imagine yourself on a white blank sheet of paper, as we put one black point, next to it another - even blacker and sharper than the previous one, etc. We are gradually gaining an ideal representation of a tiny point of absolute blackness. In general, the psyche is arranged in such a way that we can not hold the same object for more than a second without tension, so the trick is that we consistently represent black points, moving from the first to the second, and so on. Of course, apart fromtheir.(From Margaret D. Corbett, How to Get Good Sight without Glasses, Guide to Rapid Visual Improvement, Vilnius: Polina, 1990: 266 pp.).

You can use the method presented in the article "How to quickly relieve stress and nervous tension at home" for an ideal relaxation:

"Grasp your palms, apply them to each eye sockets. The eyes are covered with eyelids as well as the centers of the palms. Elbows can rest on the table, his back or his chest. Now imagine how you put a piece of white chalk in an inkwell with black ink, took a needle, dipped it in black ink, put a tiny black dot on the white-white piece of chalk, followed by another point after point. Literally, it will not take a minute for you to stop hearing your breathing, your heartbeat. You will feel such inexpressible ease and rest. Just a few minutes to restore the balance of the soul! "

Well, here we are a bit and examined the theory and method of Bates in practical application outside of ophthalmic practice.

Conclusion: when we are in harmony and balance, our attention and mental representation is productive, we will not be annoyed by the ticking of the clock and other household irritants. That is, external stimuli are some kind of indicators of our mental equilibrium, which is possible only in the state of active complete rest.
