What is lumbar radiculitis

Contrary to the error, radiculitis can not be called an independent disease, it's just a radicular syndrome that occurs with osteochondrosis in the lumbar and other parts of the spine. With these diseases, disks and vertebrae are displaced, which causes the spinal cord roots and nerve endings to be squeezed and damaged. This leads to the development of pain syndrome and other symptoms.

The lumbar region is most of the load, so most often in patients with sciatica lumbar. In the treatment of radiculitis, it is important not only to relieve the pain syndrome, but to start a full-fledged therapy of the disease, which provoked this condition.

Causes

Previously, it was believed that radiculitis - an independent inflammatory process in the nerve roots, arising without visible impact from the side. However, at the moment most experts think differently.

Radiculitis never occurs independently, so the main cause of this disease is called various pathologies in the spine. The most common causes are osteochondrosis, the formation of intervertebral hernias, deforming spondylarthrosis, and other degenerative and dystrophic processes in the spine. They lead to squeezing and inflammation of the nerve roots.

In addition to diseases of the spine, a number of other pathologies can lead to radiculitis, in which the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system are affected. These include cerebrospinal meningitis, influenza, rheumatism, tuberculosis, syphilis and other such diseases.

Important!Sometimes a person learns about the underlying disease only if there is a complication in the form of a pain syndrome with radiculitis.

Symptoms

Despite the severity of the symptoms, a proper diagnosis is still required for a correct diagnosis, since the sensations in the lumbar region may resemble sciatica - pinching the sciatic nerve, other diseases. Usually on the radiculitis indicate the following symptoms:

  1. Pain syndrome. With this disease it is extremely pronounced, usually the pain is quite intense. They can be different in character, blunt or sharp.
  2. Numbness, sensitivity disorders. Since there is compression of the nerve endings in the vertebral column, various disorders can occur from the nervous system. There may be numbness and tingling sensation in the lumbar region, in some cases it spreads to the lower extremities.
  3. Weak muscles. Because of the compression of the nerve endings, there is a disruption of the normal operation of the muscles, the patient usually feels a strong weakness.

These are the main symptoms of lumbar radiculitis, they should be noted. In later stages of the disease, the following pain syndromes can occur, the pain in them is usually particularly acute:

  • lumbago, is characterized by a sharp pain in the lumbar spine;
  • sciatica, shooting by the nature of the pain localizes below the waist, gives into the buttock;
  • lyubmishialgia, is a combination of lumbago and sciatica, the pain is usually very severe, burning.

Attacks with these pain syndromes can last from a few minutes to an hour, usually they occur after physical exertion and intense stress. You can remove them with painkillers. Often during attacks, there is a strong tension in the muscles of the back and lower limbs.

Which doctor heals

If you suspect a radiculitis, you should consult a neurologist, if necessary, you may need to consult a surgeon - an orthopedist, it all depends on the concomitant diseases and features of the course of the syndrome.

To make a correct diagnosis, a full examination is necessary. Usually, an X-ray of the lumbar spine is required, and MRI or CT, other tests may also be prescribed. Each individual case can have its own characteristics.

How to treat sciatica in the home

At a radiculitis ordinarily it is not required hospitalization or stay in a hospital, treatment in house conditions is admissible. It is worth considering that the treatment of this disease is usually long, all necessary procedures must be performed in full. It is also extremely important to engage in the therapy of a disease that provoked radiculitis.

The treatment is aimed at removing the pain syndrome and other consequences of pinching the roots of the spinal cord and nerve endings. It is necessary to relieve pain, muscle spasm, to eliminate the inflammatory process in the lumbar spine.

Surgery and other serious therapies may be required if there are hernias and other consequences of degenerative diseases of the spine, in which it is impossible to recover with medication and manual therapy.

Important!To treat sciatica should be strictly under the supervision of a doctor.

With exacerbations of sciatica, the patient is recommended to bed rest, maximally restrict mobility. Physical stress in an acute disease will irritate the nerve endings and provoke an increase in the pain syndrome.

In some cases, the patient is shown wearing a specialized orthopedic corset, which limits mobility in the lumbar spine and returns it to anatomically correct position. After the removal of the main pain syndrome, the patient is usually shown therapeutic exercises, massage and other procedures.

Treatment with medicines

At a radiculitis is applied some groups of preparations which help to get rid of a pain and to remove a muscular spasm. The following means are mandatory, they are usually prescribed by a doctor:

  1. Anesthetic tablets. Usually, anti-inflammatory analgesics are used, which are dispensed without a prescription. The most commonly used drugs are ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Orthofen and others. Tablets are advised to use with a strong pain syndrome, then they advise switching to ointments.
  2. Injections from sciatica. With severe pain, if pills do not help or their use is not permitted, blockades and pain medications in the form of injections are used. Usually, novocaine or lidocaine blockades are used. Also, there are drugs designed specifically to combat radiculitis and other similar diseases, they include Movalis and Milgamma. These drugs are combined, they also include vitamins and other substances.
  3. Ointments from radiculitis and osteochondrosis. On funds for external use pass after withdrawal of exacerbation and severe pain syndrome. The most common analgesic ointments are called Finalgon, Naise and their analogues. Also spread ointments based on snake venom, the most effective include Viprosal and its analogues.
  4. Miracle relaxants. When a muscle spasm occurs, a remedy is used to remove it. Such drugs are usually prescribed once to stop an attack. Apply Sirdalud and its analogs.

These are the main drugs and their most common names, which are used in the fight against radiculitis. B vitamins can also be prescribed, usually in the form of injections. They help to cope faster with the disease.

It is worth remembering that the drug treatment is aimed only at eliminating the symptoms of the pathology of the lumbar spine. To finally get rid of the disease and its attacks, you should practice exercise, normalize the regime of the day, attend physiotherapy.
